Whether you own a property that requires winter maintenance or you are a snow removal contractor, you’ve got a tough job. When Mother Nature blasts us with unpredictable winter weather, everyone looks to you to come to the rescue, pronto.  To keep your customers and employees happy and safe, you need to rely on proven materials that can restore safety quickly and effectively, such as rock salt.

But did you know you can ensure winter safety and at the same time make a positive difference to your community, your environment, and your drinking water? Becoming Smart About Salt is not about eliminating rock salt, but using this resource more wisely.

Salt is a Helpful Tool

Without question, rock salt can help to keep our roads, parking lots and pathways safe from the dangers of snow and ice. But as population, traffic, and infrastructure grow, too much of a good thing isn’t always best and rock salt contains the compounds sodium and chloride.  As we find higher concentrations of these compounds in our drinking water, the taste and health of our water could be impacted, so when you reduce the amount of salt you use, you win – along with everyone else in our community.

But Sometimes Less is More

When you use less salt, you spend less.  Vehicles, clothing and shoes look better and last longer.  Building, sidewalks and roadways suffer less damage.  For the future of your community it means stronger infrastructure, reduced costs and better water quality. Sometimes it really is true that less is more.
